About the Event
The metalworking techniques of chasing and repoussé have a long history- from the iconic death mask of King Tut to the Statue of Liberty. These techniques involve working sheets of metal using punches and liners in a supportive medium such as wax or pitch. Since there can be a large investment in tools required for this technique, it can be cost-prohibitive for people to try.
This class simplifies the tools and techniques to allow metalsmiths to try it out and see if they like it before making any investment in equipment! Over the course of two days, we will cover how to use each of the different tools to manipulate sheets of copper to create volume and patterns, and how working the metal from both sides creates different shapes than can be achieved using any other techniques. Instructions on how to create your own set of tools from nails and other materials will also be provided.
All the tools and materials required are provided for use in class and students should be able to complete at least one copper pendant in class from the design templates provided.
