About the Event

In class, you will practice bezel making, soldering premade components, texturing, ring shank making (we’ll cover a few types), sizing, fabrication techniques (focusing on the order of operations), metal finishing, and stone setting (cabochons and prong settings). This adults-only class is suitable for beginners, and the instructor will work with you to create a piece of your own design that is within your skill level. If you are intermediate to advanced, no fear, there are things for you to learn as well! We will discuss complex shanks (such as woven), multi-stone applications, multiple component creations, and wearability concerns.

As the workshop project is build-to-order for each student, you will only pay for the materials you use. If you come to class with no supplies, expect to spend around $40-$50 for your stone(s) and sterling silver. You are welcome to bring cabochons for use that are smaller than a quarter. They may be stone, glass, ceramic, etc. but make sure the backs are flat and the stone is an even height all around. It can be any shape. The instructor will let you know if they’re suitable for use in this class (and if not, advise you on other ways to use the stone). The faceted settings you will have available are calibrated in 4mm and 6mm sizes; if you have faceted round stones you want to try, you can bring those also.

If you do not have any tools or materials, fear not! There will be a selection from which you may purchase. There will also be bezel wire, ring shank, and accent options. You can make your ring as simple or as complex as you like. The only requirement for your piece is that it is a ring, and it has at least one bezel set cabochon (this is to keep the class flowing as a group).

Required Tools: Micro butane torch and fuel, soldering block (this can be compressed vermiculite, charcoal, magnesia, honeycomb ceramic, etc. but must be designed for soldering). A regular household brick will not work. (If you don’t have one, there will be some available for use in class).

Recommended tools: Jewelry files, rawhide mallet, jewelry pliers, steel bench block. If you want to add texture or stamping, you’re welcome to bring whatever tools you have.

There will be an assortment of tools available for use in class such as texture stamps and hammers, ring mandrels, etc.

Bring lunch or purchase a boxed lunch from Fratelli’s Cafe at the Garden.
